I Too Have A Dream

January 21st, 2008

As many in our nation celebrate the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and reflect on his dream, I am reminded of my own dreams. These are some of the things I hope for in my generation and in generations to come:

  • That our children will one day live in a nation where parents will not be judged by the number of extracurricular activities their children attend, but by the quality of time they share with their children.
  • That parents who choose to be their children’s primary care giver will be regarded as highly as those who outsource their children’s care.
  • That 60 hour work weeks become a thing of the past and telecommuting and the use of distance collaboration tools become part of standard operation proceduces.

Like Dr. King, I’m looking forward to a time when we reevaluate our priorities and redefine the American Dream. Today I have a dream. What’s yours?

Here comes the sun…

December 21st, 2007

Little darling, it’s been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it’s been here

I woke up this morning and felt as if a HUGE burden had been lifted and immediately (as in, still laying in bed) began working on a tabled project. It has been a long time since I’ve felt that kind of creativity, as life has been such a whirlwind and I haven’t had time to sleep, let alone flow…

Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been here

Now that I’ve completed the coursework for my Masters — thesis project has launched, no more teachers, no more books (you know the rest) — I’m feeling my old self return, and as I reflect back on the year, I’m starting to get excited about life outside of graduate school. Yes, I am applying to Ph.D. programs, but now that I have a moment to breathe, I’m enjoying the freedom to work on what I want. So much of my reading and writing has been according to someone else’s schedule. I’m not complaining, because the instructors where great and the concepts and theories were what I wanted. I truly loved it all, but still I’m eager to finally have time to work on the projects about which I am passionate.

Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been clear
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say it’s all right
It’s all right
